A standard piano includes 88 keys: 52 white and 36 black. The white keys are the basic notes (A through G) that repeat in a pattern, and the 12 unique notes on the keyboard are formed by the 7 white keys and 5 black keys. The black keys will be in the form of either sharps (#) or flats (b), representing notes that are a half step above or below a white key. The repeating pattern of black keys is in groups of two and three, which helps in identifying the notes.

White keys: There are 52 white keys which can be used to produce the natural notes of the musical alphabet: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G.

Black keys: The piano has 36 black keys, and are arranged in a pattern of groups of two and three.
