A standard piano includes 88 keys: 52 white and 36 black. The white keys are the basic notes (A through G) that repeat in a pattern, and the 12 unique notes on the keyboard are formed by the 7 white keys and 5 black keys. The black keys will be in the form of either sharps (#) or flats (b), representing notes that are a half step above or below a white key. The repeating pattern of black keys is in groups of two and three, which helps in identifying the notes.
